For districts
What the law requires
- Students use AI only under a teacher's direction.
- AI cannot be the main basis for grading, discipline or promotion.
- At least once a year, tell families in writing which AI tools you use and which companies make them. Explain what student data they collect, how far it is shared and why each tool is used.
- Parents and guardians can opt their student out of student-facing AI tools at any time, in writing. Students cannot be penalized and must still get their core instruction.
- Your school board adopts a written AI policy before the 2027-28 school year.
The Oklahoma State Department of Education has published guidance and a model policy. The model suggests telling families within 30 days when you add a new data-collecting AI tool during the year. This is model policy guidance, not a separate statutory deadline.
