For districts
Prepare for the rule
- Review the final rule with your district's counsel before updating your internet safety policy.
- Identify each instructional AI tool and explain it to families before students use it.
- Confirm when parent opt-in is required and how your district will record it.
- Plan a comparable non-AI option for families who say Not yet.
- Make your approved AI tool list and AI policy easy for parents to find.
- Confirm state reporting duties, including tool names, grades, subjects, frequency, duration and any safety or security incidents.
Your checklist
- List every AI tool students use.
- Decide which tools you approve.
- Review the final rule, update your policy and take it to your board.
- Write a plain explanation of each tool for families.
- Collect each family's choice as your policy requires and keep the record.
- Publish your tool list and policy.
- Confirm what your state report needs and prepare the records.
For parents
What this means for your family
- Ask your school which AI tools your student may use and what each one does.
- Ask when your permission is needed before your student uses a tool directly.
- Ask what comparable work without AI is available if you say Not yet.
- Ask where to read your district's approved AI tool list and AI policy.
Questions to ask your school
