What an AI tool can learn about your student

The chats are only the beginning. A plain look at what these tools collect, who can read it, and the four questions that clarify it fast.

When parents hear "the school is using AI", the worry is usually about answers: will it do the homework, will it be wrong, will it be unfair. Those are good questions. There is a second set that families almost never get asked about, and it is the set a permission slip is supposed to answer.

What a tool can hold about your student

  1. Everything typed into it, including the questions a student would never say out loud.
  2. Account details: an email, a phone number, a school name, sometimes a date of birth.
  3. Device details: what kind of machine, the network, and where the student was when they used it.
  4. Usage records: how long, how often, which tools, which subjects.
  5. Anything a student uploads: a photo of a worksheet, a page of handwriting, a voice recording.

Who might read it

Some school tools are built so the teacher and the family can see the chat history. Some are read by staff at the company that made the tool, for safety reviews or to improve the product. Some can be requested through legal process, like any other record. A district that has signed a student data privacy agreement with the company has written down what is and is not allowed.

Four questions that clear it up fast

  1. Who can see what my student types: just us, the teacher, the company, anyone else?
  2. How long do you keep the chats, and who can delete them?
  3. Does my student's work get used to train the company's model?
  4. Is there a signed student data privacy agreement between the district and the company?

If your district uses Kinsent AI, questions one and four are answered on the card itself, in the section headed who can see what your student types and the section headed our privacy agreement with the company. If you do not have a card, ask the school in writing. A district should be able to answer all four.

One thing worth knowing about how Kinsent AI works: districts keep student names. The permission slip system runs on student ID numbers, so a family's identity stays with the school.
